How to teach your children healthy habits

Teaching our children healthy habits, which will last a lifetime and will keep them healthier and happier, is our obligation as caretakers and parents.

Start by making the changes in your lifestyle and providing your children a positive example. Begin making healthier decisions so that your children have a role model to look up to when faced with a difficult moment.

Limit “lazy time”, especially after meals. Television, video game, phone and computer time should be limited so that have plenty of time for “play time”.

Get your entire family active by engaging in activities which everyone in the family can be involved in. Kids will more than likely get involved if they see a supportive family gathering for some fun! Plan out activities like spending a day at the park and playing soccer. Instead of going out to the movie and to dinner, you can visit the swimming pool or go bowling.

Be encouraging and supportive. When a child in your family has reached a certain weight goal, or has been sticking to your physical activities, celebrate his accomplishment.

Reward your kid’s accomplishments and behaviors as well ,but do not use food to reward.

Involve your kids with dinnertime and when buying groceries. Learn how to read food labels and teach your children how to read them as well. Voice the importance of healthy eating and the nutritional value of fruits and veggies.
