A look at emergency education practices in African refugee camps

When a massive humanitarian disaster happens, education is the least international humanitarian relief agencies think about. Thousands of people in immediate need of food, water, shelter and protection call for an immediate help, which comes in all shapes and sizes. A coordinated system of support is structured to help these people, to protect them, to cover them with blankets, to feed them and to take all necessary precautions against diseases. Refugees are haunted in panic and desperate because they have lost their homes. Whether it was war or a natural disaster, it doesn’t make too much difference. For reasons they cannot understand, they are evacuated, terrified and profoundly traumatized.

According to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), currently in Africa there are 2.1 million refugees, 305,000 asylum-seekers, 6.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) and nearly 100,000 stateless people. The largest refugee camps are established in Sudan, Chad, Uganda, Ethiopia, and Kenya, while others are located in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Liberia, and Angola. The UNHCR reports that unlike the global trends, the number of refugees in the African continent is declining. However, nearly 98 per cent of the refugees remain in exile for prolonged periods.

One of the most disregarded aspects of refugee populations in Africa is the percentage of children living in refugee camps. In almost every case, the majority of refugee and IDP populations are children. However, humanitarian assistance for children is minimal and it definitely overlooks education.

The importance of education in refugee camps

Refugee children are traumatized and trauma often produces new behavior patterns. In the context of a refugee camp, little girls may be attacked or threatened with rape and little boys may be recruited into gangs. It is a matter of survival in the new reality; an issue of being the strongest. Adolescent women may get pregnant too early out of ignorance and adolescent men may get married too young. In other words, the lives of children in a refugee camp change so abruptly and fall apart so quickly that parents cannot really catch up with these changes, given their own survival problems. Therefore, the need for a teacher/mentor, who is able to guide children and organize education programs, is absolutely required.

Refugee children are not interested in life because they do not have a life. This, combined with the absence of education, may prove extremely dangerous because it can produce violence driven by hidden fears. One way to address these problems is to educate children. Recruiting teachers in African refugee communities is the answer to a series of social problems.

The international agency that protects and assists refugees in Africa is the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). UNHCR is present in most of African refugee camps trying to coordinate the relevant activities. However, refugees are often the victims of arguments over the curriculum. In the case of Burundian refugees in Tanzania, the officials had to decide which curriculum would be more suitable for the primary school students, that of the home country or the host nation; in other situations, the issue of the creation of a hybrid curriculum was addressed as in the case of Liberian and Sierra Leonean refugees in Guinea. In any case, UNHCR establishes rules and norms to ensure the development of educational projects.

Apart for UNHCR, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have taken initiatives to organize religious schools for Rwandan refugees in Tanzania. Christian and Muslim denominations have a place to exercise and be taught their religion. The UNESCO-UNICEF structure has organized also Swahili language classes for the Rwandan refugees as well as primary schools. Besides, one of the most successful steps taken towards the education of Rwandan refugees in Tanzania is the introduction of the Teacher Emergency Package (TEP). TEP aims at enabling students to express their feelings of trauma, while developing literacy and numeracy skills. Originally introduced by UNESCO-UNICEF in Somalia, TEP provides students with all the necessary material to learn through structured lesson planning and leisure time activities. Each package contains school supplies from Asia and Europe, usually 40 hard slates and 80 slate crayons, 80 exercise books, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, and chalk. Teachers are provided with a teacher’s guide, alphabet, a registration book, pens, blackboard paint, number posters and a map of the home country.

The United Nations and NGO education officials took the initiative to Children Activity Centers in Burundian refugee camps to shelter the Burundian refugees in Tanzania. By recruiting experienced teachers for teacher mentoring under a two-week intense curriculum, they managed to overcome the resistance of the Tanzanian authorities that banned schooling from refugee camps.

Educating children in African refugee camps is an intricate task that requires many coordinated efforts. Humanitarian organizations, local government officials, educators, parents and children, all need to be part of education activities.

All refugee children should be provided impartial access to good quality education to ensure minimum learning achievements for each one of them. The UNESCO-UNICEF structure continues to make efforts to link education to development in Africa viewing education as a part of a broader challenge to educate refugee children and offer them a chance to a better life.

5 Nature Activities For Young Children

Most children love being outdoors. But sometimes you need creative ways to encourage them to spend more time outdoors. Here are 5 nature activities for young children that may encourage a love for nature or being outdoors, while being educational too.

1. Bird Watching

You can buy a small inexpensive notebook or make your own with several sheets of paper and yarn or a stapler. Take your book and a pencil or crayons on a walk to a park. When your child observes a bird they can draw it or write down a description of it. Later you can look it up online or in a book to identify what kind of bird it was.

2. Nature Mobile

Use two sticks that are each about a foot long. Make an X out of your sticks and use twine to connect them. Using more twine hang objects you find in your backyard, park, or on a nature walk. You can hang flowers, pine cones, leaves, etc from your mobile.

3. Color Walk

This is a fun variation to a nature walk. Assign each child a color. Younger children can hunt for small objects that match their color (rocks, leaves, etc.). Older children can write down what they saw that was their assigned color.

4. Treasure Map

If you have more than one child you can give one a small “treasure” (dollar store toy, candy, or other treat) to hide for their sibling. Then help them draw a treasure map to find the item. Older children can write directions instead of drawing a map, (Go to the pine tree, take 3 steps left, look for a brown rock, etc). this activity can also be done indoors.

5. Rock Painting

Take a walk on a trail or in your neighborhood. Find some medium sized smooth rocks. Take them home and paint designs or faces on them.

Acapulco — A Great Vacation Place for Kids

The popular impression of Acapulco is as a romantic getaway or a place for Spring Break parties, but in truth, the younger set also enjoys what Acapulco has to offer for a family vacation.

Beaches. The beaches inside the bay of Acapulco have waves, but they are calmer than out on the ocean front, and are just right for young children. At the beach you can take the kids on a jet ski ride, or climb aboard the big “banana.” Day trips on glass bottom boats to Isla Roqueta or excursions by boat into the bay are also good fun.

Kids’ Programs. Back at the hotel, you may find that the hotel activities desk has planned a special program just for children. Usually these activities are restricted to kids from about 6 years of age to about 12 years, and they involve pool activities, exercises, tours of the building, crafts, stories and videos. Kids’ Programs are not offered by every hotel, and usually they are set up just for high season or on weekends during the summer. If your hotel has a kids’ program, it is usually offered without additional charge.

CiCi Water Park. This water park has lots of amusements, rides, a “lazy river,” and best of all, swimming with dolphins. Delfines Paradise (with an office on Condesa Beach) also offers kids a chance to swim with dolphins in their own environment.

Parque Papagayo. Acapulco’s “central park” is a great place for strolling around, buying souvenirs and eating snacks. You can also go out in paddle boats, and the younger kids can enjoy inflated jumping equipment. A small train and a miniature bus take tours around. There is a model galleon in the lake, and lots of animals to look at. Kids enjoy feeding the ducks.

AquaPlanet. This attraction is in “La Isla” (in Acapulco’s “Diamond Zone”). Aquaplanet is an educational center for grade school children, designed to entertain as it explains about water conservation and ecology. Other options include a rock climbing wall, a large kid’s pool, mini-golf and bumper boats.

Mágico Mundo Marino is a marine museum with some water fun built in as well. It is found in between the Caleta and Caletilla beaches on the west side of Acapulco’s bay.

Other entertainment options for the kids include the malls, of course. Not only do Acapulco’s main shopping areas offer a big selection of first-run movies, but also video arcades and “fun centers.” Recorcholis is in the Gran Plaza. Another arcade is in Galerías Diana. In the Plaza Bahía shopping center there is a full-service bowling alley.

Excursions of several kinds are also in the offing. The Shotover Jet takes you in a high-speed hydrofoil along the Laguna de Tres Palos. This is a great chance to see and learn about tropical wildlife. Many families simply go to the Laguna and rent a boat for the day and go out on the lake. It is a self-guided tour to a beautiful tropical forest.

Families with older children can enjoy an historical tour, like the one of Fort San Diego, first built in 1616. There is also a small tour of the “House of Masks” near the fort, which kids in junior high and older can appreciate.

For nature lovers, the best hikes are up in the Veladero National Park, the natural, mountainous area that surrounds Acapulco.

If you take a short trip to Acapulco’s central square, or Zócalo, in the late afternoons or early evenings, you may arrive when the clowns are performing in the gazebo. If you are lucky, you will catch an impromptu show of music or dance.

Finally, browsing the local markets may be an activity that the kids will remember for a long time. The biggest is the Central Market downtown, which is busy with fish, meat and produce as well as all sorts of other merchandise. In Acapulco’s “Golden Zone” you will find several markets that cater to tourists with toys, clothing and souvenirs.

If you need the services of a babysitter while having a vacation in Acapulco, just ask at the concierge or reception desk. Almost all hotels can arrange for in-room baby sitting by a qualified person who has been screened in advance.

Coaching Youth Sports

Many parents coach their children’s sports teams. It can be an overwhelming task and far more responsibility than it may appear at first glance. Being well prepared is the key. There are a few important points to keep in mind that will make the experience more enjoyable and rewarding for yourself and the kids, and help you avoid the mistakes that can cause headaches.

Setting the standard

The first thing you need to do is establish your ground rules with team members and parents right from the start. It’s best to have a meeting with parents after the first practice and go over a code of conduct for parents and players. This should include a brief summary of your coaching philosphy and contact information, including notice to be given if players are unable to attend a game or practice. Also it’s the best time to spell out the behaviour expected from players regarding sportsmanship, respect for team mates, respect for officials and opponents, and any other rules you wish to set, as well as consequences if these expectations are not met. The beginning of the season is the best time to set a standard and make everyone aware of expectations. You don’t have to be a drill sargeant, but be firm and factual, this can save you a lot of grief down the road.

Always be professional in your conduct, you set the standard for the team, if you’re late, unprepared, or behave in an unprofessional manner, the kids will pick up on this and you will sow the seeds of discipline problems with your team.

Running Practices

Running good practices is vital to the success of your team. In many sports the amount of time a player has direct control of the ball or puck during a game is very limited, whereas in practice you have the opportunity to spend the time necessary to learn and perfect new skills. Here are some tips on running practices :

i) Make sure your team has a thorough warm up before performing any high intensity activity. By warming up properly, you’ll reduce injuries, and improve flexibility and mental focus.

ii) Repetition is the key to developing and refining any motor skill. Don’t be afraid to practice a particular skill over and over and over until your players reach the level of proficiency you’re looking for. At the same time, in any individual practice, if you get the sense your players are getting tired and losing concentration, it’s time to move on ot a different skill and give them a mental break.

iii) Keep everyone moving as much as possible. Boredom and discipline issues can result if players are left standing around for too long. Try to keep everyone involved and active during the practice. Keeping a high, consistent level of activity during practice will also improve your team’s conditioning.

iv) Try to incorporate games into your drills as much as possible. Kids will have more fun and be willing to work hard if you can add an element of competition to your drills.

During the game

It all comes down to you. Players take their cue from the coach, even in subtle ways. It’s important that you project an air of quiet confidence, control and resilience on the bench during games. Key points to remember:

i) Keep your emotions in control. No yelling at referees or players, throwing things etc. You always want to be professional and above reproach in your conduct. If you have a serious concern over the officiating, try to speak with them in a calm, matter of fact, non-emotional manner. If you have a problem with a player, same thing. If you lose your cool, players will be prone to do so as well and the situation can degenerate into chaos.

ii) Try to keep playing time as equal as possible. Remeber you’re dealing with kids, 99.9% of whom will not go on to play professionally. Sports is and should be fun for all. If you want to play your best players at the critical times in a game, try to let the others play at times that are less critical, such as during a blow out win or loss.

iii) Encourage respect for the opposition and a spirit of fair play.

iv) Don’t get too high after a win or too low after a loss. If you play or coach sports long enough, you’ll have plenty of each. Try to keep an even keel.

After the season

When the season is over, it’s a good idea to get together and recognize the contributions of each of the players, their parents, and the assitant coaches and trainers.

Whether your team has had a successful season or not, you can foster a feeling of success and achievement. With my son’s soccer team a few years ago, we bought ribbons and made up certificates for each of the players, awarding them on the basis of that child’s best skill. One kid got a certificate for being the best passer, another for being the best dribbler, one was the best shooter etc. Each kid received a certificate and was able to feel that he was the best on the team at some element of the game.

Be sure to thank the parents for their contributions in getting the kids to the field on time, and especially recognize and thank anyone who has volunteerd their time for the team, be they assistant coaches, trainers, managers etc.

Coaching a youth sports team is a big responsibility, but can be an extremely rewarding experience. Without coaching volunteers, youth sports wouldn’t exist. I have a huge amount of respect for anyone who volunteers their time and effort to coach kids and teach them the important lessons of sports and life.

5 Benefits Of Sports For Children

One of the endeavors I advocate parents get their kids involved in more than any others is team sports, and for very good reason. I know of no better way to make sure kids get the lessons they need early on in life and start building the kind of values that can have a direct impact on every other thing they do as they grow older and mature into adults. Indeed, entire books could be written about the positive influence sports activities have on a child’s life–an influence many carry into adulthood even if they never go beyond the amateur level.

Here are 5 to ponder:

1. Learn Life Skills

Many important life skills are learned in the youthful pursuit of sports. There are plenty of positive role models found coaching, mentoring, and refereeing in sports at this stage, and children get a chance to see how they live their lives and form positive relationships with them.

But it goes further than that.

They learn to deal with competition and adversaries. They learn about setting goals and carrying them out. Not to mention that they learn about control as they get older, choosing self-discipline while their friends get distracted by less than healthy life pursuits.

2. Self Esteem and Confidence

Sports are also a great source of confidence. Whenever they achieve a goal or overcome a challenge, children become confident in themselves, but that self esteem also comes from being in control of your body and staying active. In fact, one of the easiest ways to improves someone’s emotional well-being is by making sure they get a regular dose of exercise.

3. Stress Maintenance

All that exercise and great physical health are also contributors to maintaining stress.

And as you well know, stress is one of the most dangerous things to the human body, leading to all types of diseases while at the same time lowering the quality of life we have while we are here.

Sports provide an outlet for that stress, and being in shape creates good, positive emotions that hold it at bay.

4. Academic Excellence

Much like sports-involved children are less likely to get into more unhealthy habits when they get older, such as drinking and running around causing trouble, even younger kids are more likely to excel academically if they are sports active. There are several reasons for this. For one, a healthy physical state is good for your body overall and improves your cognition and memory.

But to go further, most schools require a certain grade point average in order for children to continue doing what they love–which is staying on the team. This carries on especially later in life, and as children grow, this incentive really shows them that there are always consequences for the choices we make and the habits we form.

All great lessons for a growing child.

5. Physical Exercise

No article about the benefits of sports, no matter how short, would be complete without mentioning the physical benefits. It’s no secret that a child active in this way will develop stronger muscles and a healthy cardiovascular system. What’s perhaps even more important is that while they hold off child obesity, they are also setting a foundation for a fit life–a foundation they can take into adulthood with them.

At the end of it all, what you should really be asking yourself is, “Where do I sign up?” I’ll say it again–there’s nothing better you can do for your child than get them involved in sports at a young age and keeping them involved, even if these current economic times come down to cutting other things out of their lives.

These types of activities improve their lives in their health in countless ways that can last a lifetime. What more could a parent ask for?

How to teach your children healthy habits

Teaching our children healthy habits, which will last a lifetime and will keep them healthier and happier, is our obligation as caretakers and parents.

Start by making the changes in your lifestyle and providing your children a positive example. Begin making healthier decisions so that your children have a role model to look up to when faced with a difficult moment.

Limit “lazy time”, especially after meals. Television, video game, phone and computer time should be limited so that have plenty of time for “play time”.

Get your entire family active by engaging in activities which everyone in the family can be involved in. Kids will more than likely get involved if they see a supportive family gathering for some fun! Plan out activities like spending a day at the park and playing soccer. Instead of going out to the movie and to dinner, you can visit the swimming pool or go bowling.

Be encouraging and supportive. When a child in your family has reached a certain weight goal, or has been sticking to your physical activities, celebrate his accomplishment.

Reward your kid’s accomplishments and behaviors as well ,but do not use food to reward.

Involve your kids with dinnertime and when buying groceries. Learn how to read food labels and teach your children how to read them as well. Voice the importance of healthy eating and the nutritional value of fruits and veggies.
